000287 Nikos Yialouris, Neighbourhood of Chios, 1979, oil pastels on paper, 78.5 × 58.5 cm
Throughout his artistic career, Yialouris adopted various stylistic paths. Two directions were dominant: a) works inspired by European modernism, and b) works rooted in folk art. While in his folk-inspired artworks his style remained consistent (though gradually infused with a distinct personal tone), in his refined, modernist pieces, he was eager to experiment with different expressive approaches. The composition Neighborhood of Chios is dated to 1979, following the famous linoleum print series inspired by the island’s villages. This particular painting depicts the Aghia Marina Kaloplytou Neighbourhood as seen from the artist’s attic; a church adorned with flags (possibly for a celebration) can be seen on the right. In the center and left, the street is depicted—featuring a red pickup truck and tiny houses. Here Yialouris's style appears more realistic. The painter uses clear outlines (a hallmark of his approach), but avoids distortions. And the colours—bright and clean—retain a connection to reality; the artist’s Neighborhood in the city of Chios.
