000290 Nikos Yialouris, Neighbourhood, 1989, oil pastels on paper, 90.5 × 70 cm
Although dated ten years after the painting Neighbourhood of Chios, the Neighborhood stylistically appears similar. A small street in the old town of Chios (as suggested by the façades of the houses) is depicted, decorated with flags for a religious or national celebration. With clean outlines, a relatively realistic—albeit somewhat fluid—drawing style, and bright colours, Yialouris captures the city, the Aghia Marina Kaloplytou Neighbourhood as seen from his house. His intention here is not to interpret the scene through a personal, modernistic idiom (as is usually the case in his artworks), but rather to depict the neighborhood as faithfully as possible: the houses with their wooden shutters and tiled roofs, and above all, the playful interplay of colours created by the garlands and multicolored flags.
