000082 Rembrandt [Hamerszoon van Rijn], Landscape with a Cottage and Haybarn, 1641, etching, 41 × 47.5 cm
This particular engraving (Bartsch 225) by Rembrandt is one of the well-known landscapes of his early printmaking. It is also considered one of the most beautiful landscape views around Amsterdam. The main subject is the old cottage, with the barn on the left—and a carriage inside. A woman can be seen in one of the house windows of the house, another one accompanied by a dog is crossing the bridge on the right, while two children are fishing. The roof and tower of the Konstveloren House can be seen to the right of the scene, the Amstel River in front and on the left, a panoramic view of Amsterdam. However, the Dutch capital cannot be seen from where the Konstveloren House is located. Thus, this is essentially a fictional depiction, i.e., the artist has freely combined various details from studies of nature. Rembrandt, one of the greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age painting, in his time had achieved pan-European fame with his engravings. Today, he is considered one of the greatest engravers of all time, both for his technical skills and for the innovations he made to the art of engraving. Rembrandt's engraving plates were sold in the art market and during the 18th century many copies were printed by various publishers. Many are still in circulation on the art market today. The work in the Chios Municipal Gallery belongs to this category.
