Ήλιος
000495 Nikos Yialouris, The Sun, n.d., mixed media on paper, 65.5 × 51 cm
Yialouris's engagement with folk art was not only for aesthetic reasons. The painter often received commissions to execute decorative compositions. Many of his works were realized as stained-glass windows (vitraux), murals, or found their way into graphic design applications such as posters, printed materials, etc. The Sun may have been used in a stained-glass window or a poster. His face is inscribed within a radiant yellow circle, with features outlined in a clean black line. The rays, however, become an intricate play of triangular and curved motifs in various colours—blue, light blue, golden, and red—in a rhythmic alternation that aligns with the inherently decorative and repetitive character of folk art.
