004887 Nikos Yialouris, Helmet of an Ancient Warrior, 2003, mixed media on paper, 33 × 17 cm

Nikos Yialouris died on June 1, 2003. This specific drawing, dated by the artist himself on January 13 of the same year, belongs to his final body of work. In his allegorical compositions referencing antiquity, the motif of the helmet was frequently used as a symbol of the warrior. The same occurs here: the Corinthian-type helmet is not merely an empty piece of armor—it symbolizes the warrior's head. The golden helmet is mounted on a pole (possibly referencing the ancient practice of impaling the heads of the defeated). The black colour suggests shadow within—the hollow shell. Yet the red on parts of the exterior points unmistakably to blood. Expressionistic in its treatment of line and colour, and tragic in theme, the piece should be linked to Yialouris’s ‟Heroes” cycle. It grapples with the idea of sacrifice and death—concepts that undoubtedly preoccupied the aging artist more and more as time went on.
