001081 Nikos Yialouris, The Moon, 1997, mixed media on cardboard, 50.5 × 71 cm
Nikos Yialouris had depicted the Moon in many variations, though in reality he repeatedly worked on the same motif, within the strict framework of folk art conventions. In this particular image—essentially a depiction of the sun–moon duality, seen also as a male–female pairing—the two faces intertwine in a surreal portrayal. They are inscribed within a circle, around which spread triangular, serpentine, or wing-like rays resembling the feathers of a paradise bird. A hard black outline clearly defines the contours of the drawing, while the surfaces are filled with flat, clean, intense colours. The composition may well be a design for a commissioned decorative piece.
