000841 Nikos Yialouris, Trojan Cycle, 1992, mixed media on paper, 58 × 70 cm
Showing many similarities with artwork no. 000478, this particular painting depicts the wooden skeleton of the Trojan Horse within a black-and-red, dystopian landscape. The “gift” of the Achaeans—a deadly trap—becomes, for Yialouris, a dramatic reminder, a reflection of contemporary events, particularly the First Gulf War (1990–1991). In his seventies and still an astute political being, the painter appropriates the teachings of Surrealism to create an original allegorical iconography capable of expressing his personal concerns—his anxiety about what is unfolding in the world around him.
