000969 Nikos Yialouris, Kiosk, 1969, linoleum cut, 56 × 56.5 cm
The coastline, where the sea joins the land and man builds his houses in the immediate vicinity of the water, was of great interest to Yialouris. He depicted the port of Chios, many small picturesque harbours of the island, but also Psara and Oinousses. In this particular picture, the engraver adopts a fairly clear composition: the large zone of the sky is white (the colour of the paper), while the sea is black. The houses, in the lower and right part of the scene, are also worked with black planes and few white details, while the boats and rocks are outlined by strong white lines. Although working in an abstract and expressionistic style, Yialouris embraces the graphic details of the buildings. He also submits to the charm of the line, namely the deep cuts in the soft linoleum.
