000566 Nikos Yialouris, Tree, 1985, Indian ink on paper, 91.5 × 70 cm
On white paper, using Chinese ink and a reed pen (instead of a common pen), Yialouris draws three leafless trees and a ruined stone wall. The subject is simple, humble—likely inspired by a walk through the villages or the countryside of Chios. The trunks, stones, and shadows are painted with a harsh, edgy line, while the leafless branches stretch upwards like fingers toward the sky. The simple black-and-white composition offers an underlying sense of drama—a feeling of unspoken pain expressed through the barren, withered nature. By the mid-1980s, as a mature artist and a master of his techniques, Yialouris achieved in his drawings a near-unparalleled quality, combining technical skill with emotional depth.
