000033 Giouli Vrana, Still life, 2002, acrylic paint on canvas, 68 × 88 cm
In her art, Giouli Vrana is inspired by the great tradition of European modernism, and specifically by the movements of cubism and surrealism, in order to create her own charming, colourful compositions. This particular painting falls within the theme of still life and in particular the category of ‟table paintings”. In an interior, which is schematically indicated by a red shutter in the background and the curtain rail with the curtain rod diagonally to the left, a large round table is placed in the middle. On it fruits (apples, pears, grapes), a bottle and a glass of red wine mark an image of abundance common to this kind of paintings. The design, without adopting the fragmentation and crystalline structure of cubism, is simple, while the colour is used in clear tones and on large, tiled surfaces. The final result balances between cubism and pop art, recalling compositions by Jean Metzinger, Juan Gris, Pablo Picasso, but not constrained by the cubist austerity.
