Νερόμυλος
003018 Nikos Yialouris, Water mill, 1987, Indian ink on paper, 40.5 × 20 cm
Adopting a bird's-eye perspective, Yialouris depicts a pre-industrial building complex with a water mill on the lowest level of the picture. The mill stands out distinctly in the narrow wall of the building, which disappears between the trees. The right and upper part of the picture is occupied by the sea. Small boats are moored in the quiet bays, and small houses are built on the banks. The idyllic picture has been painted in the artist's familiar style. His realistic starting point is unquestioned, but his style betrays his wish for a loose depiction, without many details. The mature painter has mastered his materials, and he is not carried away by his subject. He subordinates the landscape to his personal style, as truly great artists do.
